SPONSORED RESEARCH PARTNER

Research collaborations allow Calit2 to bring its formidable intellectual and creative strength to bear An engaging discussion between Calit2 faculty and a potential partner begins the process. The faculty member (Principal Investigator or PI) develops a detailed proposal, including timeline, deliverable and budget. Once approved, the PI directs an interdisciplinary team of experts with access to considerable resources, meeting with the supporting partner regularly. This collaborative approach can deliver high-value results. All research contracts must be university approved are subject to 54% overhead charge. Any intellectual property generated is subject to standard University of California IP policies.

SALES AND SERVICE PROJECTS

Proof-of-concept and prototyping efforts may fall under this category. In this partnership, Calit2 personnel may perform routine technical activity on behalf of a client. The project must not involve creative work or generate new IP. This work may include basic software development, testing and measurements, characterizations, microscopy, basic materials processing and simple prototyping. All sales and service jobs must be approved by the Calit2 director, and all jobs are subject to 30% overhead charge by the university.

GIFT OF FUNDING OR EQUIPMENT

Donations to Calit2 are welcome at any time. Gifts are a powerful tool to empower Calit2 faculty to pursue innovative new ideas without burdensome directives or expectations of specific deliverables. Gifts truly allow the best innovation to occur, Through academic inquiry and creative exploration. A sponsor may indicate the reason for providing a gift, but may not indicate the expectation of any specific activity or outcome. All gifts are subject to 5% overhead charge by the university.

WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT

Companies can groom well-trained students with multidisciplinary technology experience, by sponsoring year-round internships, fellowships or intensive summer research programs. 

DEMO AND DESIGN CENTER

Industry establishes a major ‘name’ presence in the Calit2 Building, for example, outfitting a lab with new equipment that can be used by researchers and demonstrated to potential customers.
